Abstract

Forced to interact with the natural elements that invigorate a built structure and co-determine a building's experiential reality during construction, one ought to keep in mind their brute powers - earth's crushing heaviness, the erratic character of water, air's thermo-dynamic cataclysms, or the dangerous benignity of fire. Affective in a direct way, they act as guiding principles in the process of realization: While the earth targets the foundations, the roof shields from water, the openings control the flow of air, and the walls protect from the gleaming sun.

Abstract

Exploring the art, architecture, and design of memorials around the world from the late twentieth century to today. Memorials hold a special position in the cultural memory of communities, cultures and nations, and In Memory Of demonstrates this as never before. This extraordinary and moving collection of more than 60 exceptional structures commemorates some of the most destructive events of the 20th and 21st centuries, including war, genocide, massacre, terrorism, famine, and slavery. At the same time, In Memory Of shows that the power to overcome, to survive, even to forgive, is just as impactful and important. Thoughtful essays on the subjects of hope, strength, grief, loss, and fear help to contextualize the projects and address the emotional aspects of memorialization.

Abstract

Published to accompany Francis Alÿs’ major exhibition at the Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne in 2021, this reference monograph is centered on some of the Belgian-born Mexican-based artist’s key motifs and features: his 30-year groundbreaking video practice; the importance of strolling and walking for his artistic method; his interest in children’s games which he has filmed in various countries since 1999. From urban wandering to the exploration of territories and their borders documented by moving images, Alÿs’ work proposes a poetics of space through brief narratives whose finesse and accuracy invite access by the general public. If his work questions the link between artistic act and political intervention, the artist always works by allusions, with remarkable precision and economy of means, preferring poetic polysemy to frontal political commentary, favoring the merging of planned imaginary spaces with his own fictional spaces. The publication also focuses on Reel-Unreel, one of Alÿs’ major projects realized in Afghanistan, comprising children’s games and hand-drawn animation loops as well as paintings and graphic works and the eponymous video Reel-Unreel (2011). Edited and introduced by MCBA Lausanne curator Nicole Schweizer, the book features comprehensive essays by Julia Bryan-Wilson, Professor of History of Art, University of California, Berkeley; Luis Pérez-Oramas, independent curator and writer, New York; and Judith Rodenbeck, Associate Professor, Department of Media and Cultural Studies, University of California Riverside, and is generously illustrated.

Abstract

As the world races to address the climate crisis, new sustainable energy sources and other infrastructures are transforming our visual landscapes and changing the way we live. Land Art and Climate Action: Designing the 21st Century City Park highlights regenerative artworks that respond to this pivotal moment in human history and inspire viewers to embrace the beauty, abundance, and cultural vibrancy of a world that has left fossil fuels behind. Featuring three hundred color images, the book includes essays by Robert Ferry, Peter Kurz, Elizabeth Monoian, Alessandra Scognamiglio, and Sven Stremke to bring attention to design projects and landscape architecture where environmentalism is part of the concept, not an afterthought.

Abstract

Between 2014 and 2016, the artist Wendy Morris started off on different walks along the west coast of Europe, following the path of a family of Huguenots during the repression after the Edicts of Nantes at the end of the 17th century. Throughout her walks, Morris drew new maps and routes of the places visited by the Huguenot refugees, who just as today passed through Calais and Dunkerque in France, moving on to Blankenberge, Zeebrugge and then Vlissingen as their final destination in the Netherlands. Then and now again, these ports and places were known as escape routes towards a better future. It is their experiences that Morris tries to elucidate via carefully selected texts fragments, recited psalms and testimonies that are juxtaposed with official publications and regulations dictated by the Catholic Church against these Huguenots. The artist also mapped her own route while simultaneously making notes and collecting samples of grass, trees, seeds, plants, and the like, which may have been used by the refugees to heal the daily injuries caused by the long trip.
